In academic publishing, indexation is a critical benchmark that signifies a journal’s quality, credibility and accessibility. Indexing databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Excerpta Medica database (Embase) and Web of Science serve as curated repositories of high-quality scientific literature. Indexed journals are recognised for adhering to rigorous standards, ethical practices and peer-reviewed scholarship. When a journal is indexed, its content becomes more accessible to researchers, practitioners and educators around the world, and also opens doors to wider readership, increased citations and a greater academic impact.

The journey to indexation involves a meticulous evaluation process. Journals typically submit a formal application to the desired indexing database, providing comprehensive documentation that demonstrates adherence to specific criteria such as peer review policies, editorial board transparency, ethical publishing practices and timeliness and consistency in publishing. If the journal meets the required standards, it is approved for indexation.

For medical faculty in India, publishing in indexed journals is a regulatory requirement. The National Medical Commission (NMC) mandates that for promotions to higher academic positions such as Professor and Associate Professor, the faculty must have a specified type and number of publications in journals indexed in well-recognised databases, one of which is Embase.[1] This ensures that the research contributing to academic advancement is credible and of high quality.

We are proud to announce a significant milestone for the Global Journal of Cataract Surgery and Research in Ophthalmology (GJCSRO) – that it is now officially indexed in Embase, a highly regarded biomedical and pharmacological database maintained by Elsevier, starting with this issue. Being indexed in Embase signifies that GJCSRO meets stringent criteria for scientific rigor and editorial excellence, has increased visibility and fulfils one of the NMC criteria for promotion of medical teachers.

This achievement is a reflection of the collective efforts of the editorial board, peer reviewers, contributors and readers of GJCSRO. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of them for their unwavering support through these 3 years and look forward to continuing this journey of academic excellence together, achieving greater heights.
